The Shadow Kin – Another Menace to Coal Hill School

The First Doctor’s granddaughter Susan attended Coal Hill School whilst the two were on Earth in the 1960s (An Unearthly Child). Two of Susan’s school teachers, Ian and Barbara joined the Doctor and Susan in the TARDIS for adventures in space and time. Over the decades since, the Doctor has returned to Coal Hill School (Attack of the Cybermen, Remembrance of the Daleks). However, the Twelfth Doctor’s companion Clara Oswald got a job as a school teacher at Coal Hill (The Day of the Doctor) and there she met her boyfriend Danny Pink (Into the Dalek). Danny and Clara’s most troublesome pupil was Courtney Woods (Kill the Moon) and the gang fought the Skovox Blitzer together (The Caretaker). The setup of the Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswald, Danny Pink and Courtney Woods mirrors the first TARDIS team of the First Doctor, Barbara Wright & Ian Chesterton (also Coal Hill School teachers) and Susan in An Unearthly Child. The Doctor went undercover as The Caretaker at the school but he later returned to Coal Hill in the Doctor Who teenage spin-off Class. The teenage pupils at Coal Hill fought a race of creatures from another dimension called the Shadow Kin, which had the ability to possess others (including April – Co-owner of a Lonely Heart, Brave-ish Heart). For some reason, Coal Hill School has been academised (to be clear, I am in favour of academies in real life, but I am not sure why they did it here). Two of the Coal Hill gang were aliens: Charlie and his guardian, Miss Quill were Rhodians from a dead world due to a genocide (Genesis of the Daleks et al), but the Cabinet of Souls survived. Miss Quill had an arn implanted in her head which kept her enslaved. Charlie views Miss Quill as a terrorist but she prefers to see herself as a freedom fighter.

The teenage group of Charlie, his Polish boyfriend Jordan (Love is Love!), Ram, April, Tanya and Miss Quill, formed close personal and romantic relationships, whilst also studying hard for their A-Levels before heading off to university. I got A*BB at A-Level and I got 3A*s, 6As in my GCSEs. And I obtained two law degrees (Aberdeen, Bristol), although people looking at this website will think that I went to Oxford! Yes, I am clever and articulate! Although I have seen for myself (from others’ behaviour) that if you go through life thinking that you are more intelligent than people around you then people don’t like you, so don’t be patronising! You won’t get laid if you’re a patronising twat! It’s always better to be kind and to be modest. You should always be willing to admit when you are wrong and you need to be the bigger person in any difficult situation even if you didn’t start it. People won’t like you if you always think that you are right! The Coal Hill gang fought many strange aliens and creatures, including the Lankin (a vine-like creature which feasted on grief – Nightvisiting) and a Dragon that was disguised as a tattoo, which killed the headmaster of Coal Hill School (Into the Dalek, The Caretaker, Dark Water, For Tonight We Might Die, The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo). The replacement headmistress, Dorothea Ames mentions to Miss Quill that Zygons are protected on Earth (The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion, The Metaphysical Engine, or What Quill Did). April gets into a relationship with Ram, I love it when girlfriends rub my chest! There was also one episode where the group were stuck inside a classroom (a Confession Prison) and they began fighting each other. The only way to escape is by confessing their true thoughts and feelings (Heaven Sent), although this turned them against each other (Midnight). Detained is a bit like Midnight, Wild Blue Yonder and The Story and the Engine because the cast are stranded in a small room in space. Detained could easily be a stage play, like Midnight. At the end of the series, the Weeping Angels returned (The Lost), setting up a visit to the Weeping Angel homeworld in a potential second series of Class that was sadly never to be. Class was cancelled after just one series due to low viewing figures on BBC3. However, the show was groundbreaking in terms of representation, it had an incredible cast (I want to get a photo with Fady and upload it to Insta Ram), it had emotional storylines and it appealed strongly to its target audience of teenagers. Education is important because qualifications are your passport. A more educated population also leads to more desirable outcomes in general elections and referendums.

About Chris Olsen's TARDIS

I am an aspiring television producer, screenwriter and showrunner. I became a childhood fan of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who at the age of 10, when my parents introduced me to the show upon its return in 2005. I am interested in all things sci-fi, fantasy and geeky, but Doctor Who takes the crown above all else. This website will detail my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who from throughout its 60-year history. It will also contain content relating to other franchises that I grew up with as a kid, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.
