When the Fifth Doctor first met Lytton, he was a human mercenary working for the Daleks (Resurrection of the Daleks). Lytton led a taskforce to rescue Davros from a prison ship so that the Daleks can use Davros to create an antidote to the Movellan virus. Davros releases the virus, thinking himself to be immune to it. However, the Movellan virus apparently destroys him too! Lytton escapes the massacre and crops up years later in Attack of the Cybermen. The Sixth Doctor and Peri find Cybermen in the sewers of London, planning to destroy the Earth using Halley’s Comet. The Cybermen capture the Doctor, Peri, Lytton and his colleague in the TARDIS and take them to the planet Telos, which is the new home for the Cybermen. Lytton is turned into a Cyberman and although the Doctor is able to defeat the Cyber Controller, he is too late to save Lytton’s life!

The Daleks have lost the war to the Movellans (Destiny of the Daleks). The Movellans developed a virus that exclusively kills Daleks. The Daleks (with help from mercenaries like Lytton) now seek out Davros to find a cure. Lytton releases Davros from his prison and reveals to him the outcome of the Dalek-Movellan war. Outraged, Davros resolves to find a cure to the Movellan virus. Meanwhile, the Daleks make duplicates of the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough in order to send them to assassinate the High Council of the Time Lords on Gallifrey. The Doctor confronts Davros who deceives the Doctor into believing that he wants to reprogram the Daleks for good. Instead, Davros decides to wipe out the old Dalek order and create a new race of Daleks loyal to him. He releases a virus thinking himself immune to it, but this apparently kills him too, shortly before his ship explodes… Resurrection of the Daleks has a higher death count than The Terminator, which was released in the same year.

Attack of the Cybermen
★★★☆☆
TX: 05–12/01/1985
Written by Paula Moore Directed by Matthew Robinson

The Cybermen are still on the planet Telos (The Tomb of the Cybermen) and the Cyber Controller has concocted a new plan. The Cybermen intend to use Halley’s Comet to destroy the Earth in 1985, the year before Earth destroys Mondas – the birthplace of the Cybermen, during the events of The Tenth Planet. The Sixth Doctor and Peri arrive in Totters Lane, Shoreditch, London, 1985 where the First Doctor landed in An Unearthly Child. In the sewers of London (a reference to The Invasion), the Doctor and Peri meet Lytton who is a mercenary for the Cybermen, having previously been employed by the Daleks in Resurrection of the Daleks. The Cybermen capture the Doctor and his companions inside his TARDIS and force him to pilot it to the planet Telos. The Doctor and Peri meet the native Cryons who have been enslaved by the Cybermen. Lytton is converted into a Cyberman and his assistant is also killed along with two escapee Cyber slaves. The Doctor escapes and destroys the Cyber Controller and the Cyber Leader, but he is too late to save Lytton. Peri consoles the Doctor as they leave in the TARDIS, telling him that there was nothing that he could do save Lytton.
