The Foretold and other Mummies – Ancient Egyptian Horror

The Foretold was an ancient Mummy that was a soldier in a war that had long since ended. However, the Foretold had not been deactivated and so now it has been killing various passengers and crew aboard the space Orient Express, appearing only to the victims exactly 66 seconds before it kills them. The Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald arrived on the Orient Express and were ultimately able to defeat the Mummy. However, this was not the first time that the Doctor has encountered ancient Egyptian Mummies in Doctor Who

The Fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith arrive at a country manor in England, 1911. The explorer and Egyptologist Marcus Scarman has returned from Egypt a changed man – he has fallen under the influence of a powerful being called Sutekh. Sutekh is the last of the Osirans, a race with god-like powers that imprisoned Sutekh beneath a pyramid in Ancient Egypt. Marcus Scarman and a group of robot Mummies are assembling a rocket outside the priory. Their intention is to use the rocket to destroy a pyramid on Mars which is controlling Sutekh’s prison in Egypt. The rocket is being protected by devices contained inside Ancient Egyptian canopic jars. The pyramid on Mars is later glimpsed again in The Sarah Jane Adventures: Vault of Secrets. The possessed Marcus Scarman kills his own brother Lawrence Scarman. The Doctor confronts Sutekh, calling him a twisted abhorrence. Sutekh orders Marcus and the Mummies to kill the captured Sarah-Jane, but Sutekh stops when he realises that the Doctor can now be blackmailed into doing his bidding. The possessed Doctor takes Sarah-Jane, Marcus and the Mummies to the pyramid on Mars in the TARDIS. The pyramid is riddled with booby traps and Ancient Egyptian puzzles that remind Sarah-Jane of the City of the Exxilons (Death to the Daleks). The Doctor and Sarah-Jane navigate their way through the maze within the pyramid. However, they arrive too late to stop Marcus Scarman from releasing Sutekh. The Doctor realises they have less than two minutes to return to Earth and prevent Sutekh from returning through the portal to the sarcophagus in the priory. This is due to the time required for the Eye’s radio signal to travel from Mars to Earth. The Doctor and Sarah-Jane return to the priory and use a module from the TARDIS to extend the terminus of the time tunnel into the far future, resulting in the jackal-headed Sutekh dying of old age before reaching the end. However, the portal then overloads, and he and Sarah Jane flee into the TARDIS as the priory is consumed in flames. With regard to the Middle East, Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians and Trump was stupid to tear up the Iran deal and impose sanctions on Iran, a country that the west was beginning to develop positive relations with. The west should never intervene militarily in the Middle East again.

The Twelfth Doctor and Clara arrive on the Orient Express, a luxury train service travelling through space. However, all is not well onboard. The passengers are being killed by a mysterious Mummy that only the victims can see, 66 seconds before they are killed. Clara discovers a sarcophagus in one of the carriages. The Doctor confronts the train security chief, who reveals that some members of the crew and passengers are ill. The Doctor realises that the Mummy is picking off the old and the ill first. The Mummy kills more crew members and passengers until the train computer, Gus reveals that it has been testing the passengers and crew. Gus has sent various invitations to the Doctor to travel on the Orient Express, including during The Big Bang. Clara is angry with the Doctor for deceiving her again, as he knew that this could be a trap. Gus blackmails the Doctor and the other survivors into testing the Foretold to probe for weaknesses. The Doctor realises that the artefact onboard is in fact a military flag and that the Mummy (the Foretold) is a soldier that has yet to be deactivated. The Doctor says “we surrender” moments before the Foretold kills him. Gus blows up the train anyway, but the Doctor is able to teleport him, Clara and the other survivors off in the nick of time. The Doctor and Clara bid farewell to Perkins, the mechanic onboard the train. Clara initially decided to leave the TARDIS because the Doctor also tricked her in Kill the Moon. However, she changes her mind and decides to continue travelling with the Doctor.

About Chris Olsen's TARDIS

I am an aspiring television producer, screenwriter and showrunner. I became a childhood fan of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who at the age of 10, when my parents introduced me to the show upon its return in 2005. I am interested in all things sci-fi, fantasy and geeky, but Doctor Who takes the crown above all else. This website will detail my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who from throughout its 60-year history. It will also contain content relating to other franchises that I grew up with as a kid, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.
