Scotland the Brave!

Doctor Who has a very strong connection to Scotland. Multiple Doctor Who stories have been set or filmed in Scotland over the years, including The Highlanders, Terror of the Zygons, Tooth and Claw, Under the Lake/Before the Flood and The Eaters of Light. And also, many Scottish people have worked on Doctor Who both in front of and behind the camera, notably former showrunner Steven Moffat. Four of the actors who have played the Doctor are Scottish: Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant, Peter Capaldi and Ncuti Gatwa. There have also been many other prominent Scottish characters in Doctor Who, played by Frazer Hines, Karen Gillan, Caitlin Blackwood and Michelle Gomez. Furthermore, my mother is Scottish and she is from Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, so I am half Scottish and I graduated from Aberdeen University, Scotland in 2016, aged 21. I studied Scots and English law. Two thirds of my Aberdeen law school class were female! Now those are my kind of ratios! Aberdeen is highly ranked for law! One of the key decisions for me studying at Aberdeen Law School was us meeting the late, great David Lessels. I never want to go back to Aberdeen and I don’t like going to Edinburgh either because I find it triggering being there too. My mum studied illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee University and she later studied librarianship at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. My late great grandmother lived in Strichen, which is where Alex Salmond was from and my late grandfather met Alex Salmond too. My dad has a masters degree in engineering from Glasgow University and my uncle (my dad’s brother) used to live in Edinburgh. At university, I had a long term girlfriend from West Barns near Edinburgh. 🥰 I really loved her! I have had loads of Scottish girlfriends! I abstained from voting in the Scottish Independence Referendum of 2014, whilst I was a student at Aberdeen University (although I leaned towards voting No back then). However, Scotland’s best interests are no longer preserved within the United Kingdom as evidenced by Brexit, so I would now vote Yes. Scotland should quit the UK in order to rejoin the EU. No one thought that Brexit would happen when the Scottish Independence Referendum was held because pollsters underestimated just how racist and xenophobic the UK really is. The Scottish Independence Referendum should have been held after the EU Referendum not before it. I am going to meet Nicola Sturgeon and she was very popular at Aberdeen University when I was an undergraduate student there. Scottish independence is inevitable and this was depicted in the Doctor Who episode The Beast Below, in which Scotland has its own spaceship in the far future. The Scottishness of Doctor Who is part of the show’s appeal and its success. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Doctor Who is fantastic for Scottish representation! Och aye! You have a wee show there that’s affa good!

About Chris Olsen's TARDIS

I am an aspiring television producer, screenwriter and showrunner. I became a childhood fan of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who at the age of 10, when my parents introduced me to the show upon its return in 2005. I am interested in all things sci-fi, fantasy and geeky, but Doctor Who takes the crown above all else. This website will detail my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who from throughout its 60-year history. It will also contain content relating to other franchises that I grew up with as a kid, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.
