The planet Karfel is ruled over by the disgusting and tyrannical Borad. The Borad disguised itself due to its hideous nature as a result of a number of experiments. Now the Borad seeks a mate that he can replicate the same effects of the experiment on. Unfortunately the Borad has chosen Peri, who has arrived with the Sixth Doctor, marking the Doctor’s first onscreen visit to the planet Karfel in Doctor Who.

The Sixth Doctor and Peri arrive on the planet Karfel, which was previously visited by the Third Doctor and Jo Grant offscreen. The Doctor and Peri meet Tekker and discover that he and the rest of Karfel live under the tyrannical rule of the ugly Borad. Any criminals are executed by being thrown into the Timelash, a time corridor that displaces people in time and space. The Doctor follows Vena who was thrown down the Timelash and arrives in 19th Century Scotland, where he meets a man called Herbert. The three return to Karfel in the TARDIS. Meanwhile, the aggressive and theatrical Tekker declares war on the Bandrils for no serious reason. Peri is captured and about to be killed by a Morox as part of an uncontrolled experiment. The Doctor recognises the Borad as Megelen, a crazed scientist he encountered on his previous visit to Karfel and exposed to the Council for unethical experiments on Morloxes. Megelen wishes to replicate its effects to create a partner – and he has chosen Peri! The Doctor engineers a kontron crystal found within the Timelash to create a time manipulator to act as a form of camouflage for when he confronts the revolting Borad. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! The Borad kills Tekker after the Doctor reveals that the disgusting Borad intends to let the people of Karfel die. The Doctor uses the time manipulator to trick the Borad into firing a laser beam into the kontron crystal which reflects back onto the Borad and destroys him instead. Herbert helps the Doctor rescue Peri. They return to the Council Chamber where the imminent threat of a Bandril nuclear strike prompts the Doctor to take drastic action. He materialises the TARDIS in the path of the incoming warhead, risking his own life to save Karfel. He does so successfully and returns to Karfel to find Megelen (the Borad) returned from the dead and threatening the Council Chamber – the other one was a clone of this original. Megelen (the Borad) is made unbalanced by the image of himself in a boarded up mirror, revealing the reason he hid himself away, and in this state he is pushed into the Timelash by the Doctor, where it is suggested that he ends up as the Loch Ness Monster. The Doctor reunites with Peri, revealing that Herbert is H.G. Wells, the famous science-fiction novelist.
