Drashigs – Dish Rags and Glove Puppets!

One of the strangest adventures that the Doctor had was when and he and his companion Jo Grant were caught inside a miniscope – a miniature zoo. The Third Doctor and Jo were miniaturised too and terrorised by nightmarish creatures called the Drashigs. The Drashigs were green, caterpillar-like monsters with sharp teeth and terrifying screams. The Drashigs were one of the most memorable monsters featured in Doctor Who. In many ways, Classic Doctor Who is better than Modern Doctor Who.

The Third Doctor and Jo are on their way to Metebelis III, the famous blue planet of the Acteon Group. On the way, they are accidentally caught inside a miniscope – a miniature zoo, which contains many other specimens. The Twelfth Doctor later speculates that he and Clara Oswald are trapped inside a miniscope in Robot of Sherwood. Inside the miniscope is the lost ship the SS Bernice, which disappeared back in 1926 in the Indian Ocean. However, the ship and its crew have been preserved in a time loop inside the miniscope, where they are terrorised by a plesiosaurus for the entertainment of others. The Doctor and Jo venture outside into the mechanics of the miniscope, where the Doctor finally realises what they are inside. Jo and the Doctor are pursued by terrifying, caterpillar-like monsters called Drashigs, which are another specimen within the miniscope. The Drashigs chase the Doctor out of the miniscope, where he discovers that he and Jo are on the bureaucratic planet of Inter Minor. The miniscope is illegally owned by a travelling showman called Vorg and his assistant Shirna. The Doctor cooperates with a reluctant Vorg to return into the machine by linking it with the TARDIS. After the Doctor goes back into the Scope, which is now overheating and losing its life support due to the Drashigs’ damage, the device he attached is shot by a tribunal member and ceases to function, leaving the Doctor stranded. The Doctor finds Jo, but they collapse on the floor as the life support on the machine fails. Two Drashigs escape, but Vorg kills them by fixing the eradicator, sabotaged by the mutinous tribunal members, who later are killed by the Drashigs. He fixes the Doctor’s device, pushing the Phase Two switch which brings the Doctor and Jo back, just in time, and also returning all of the Scope’s other occupants to their rightful space-time positions. As the penniless Vorg tries to get enough credit bars to return home by using the old three-magnum-pods-and-a-yarrow-seed trick, the two time travellers depart in the TARDIS.

About Chris Olsen's TARDIS

I am an aspiring television producer, screenwriter and showrunner. I became a childhood fan of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who at the age of 10, when my parents introduced me to the show upon its return in 2005. I am interested in all things sci-fi, fantasy and geeky, but Doctor Who takes the crown above all else. This website will detail my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who from throughout its 60-year history. It will also contain content relating to other franchises that I grew up with as a kid, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.
