Western Adventures – The Wild West in Doctor Who

The American Wild West is the land of opportunity and danger! Cowboys and gunslingers dominate the scene and cacti and old western towns are part of the adventure. The Doctor and his companions have visited the American Wild West a few times during the 19th Century in Doctor Who (The Gunfighters, A Town Called Mercy). Just don’t hum the Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon whilst you are in the company of the Doctor – he won’t want to hear it again! Just to be clear, I have never held a gun in my life and I intend to keep it that way! I also think that America is one of the worst countries in the world and I will never go back there (and I also hate that they love peanuts, which I am very allergic to). Most Americans are stupid! I hate America! And I absolutely HATE Donald Trump! Why the fuck would anyone vote for Donald Trump? He’s a racist prick! Donald Trump is incompetent. Donald Trump is the worst president that America has ever had and he brings only racism and misogyny, Donald Trump is a racist rapist and everyone that voted for him (and Brexit) was racist and xenophobic. The American South is still profoundly racist and things have not moved on since the days of the slave trade, segregation and the KKK. The former leader of the KKK endorsed Trump for president! Donald Trump is the most racist President that America has ever had and there have been quite a few racist American Presidents in the past (i.e. Andrew Jackson and Ronald Reagan). Not all Republicans are racist but all Trump voters are. Barack Obama was the best US President in my lifetime (I was born on 7th August 1994). Thanks Obama! Obama please save us from Trump’s tyranny and racism! Trump is just jealous of Obama and his success, Trump is a fragile, thin-skinned tyrant who couldn’t take Obama’s taunts at the White House Correspondence Dinner 2011 and he is doing all of this as petty revenge. I would like Michelle Obama to run for US President and I am certain that she would win an election. The USA needs to finally elect a black female president and I am sure that Michelle Obama would be able to win over voters in a way that Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris were unfortunately unable to. The Democratic Party in America is still a right-wing party, it has purged a lot of the actual socialist elements of its structure over the last few years. Bernie Sanders could have won the Presidency of the USA even though many people believe that it is impossible for America to elect a socialist president. I am also disappointed that Al Gore lost the Electoral College vote to warmonger George W Bush in the 2000 US Election because Al Gore would have made a far better US President in terms of climate change, foreign policy and security. The US Electoral College should be abolished! Anyone who votes Republican has to be, to some extent, insane. The Republicans are anti-science, anti-women, anti-LGBTQ, anti-environment and anti-immigration. Although I am not a fan of guns nor of violence, I wish that bullet had gone through Donald Trump’s head rather than through his ear. Trump is a fascist and he and Putin are both similar to Adolf Hitler. I am proud to say that there are more attacks and insults against Donald Trump in this website than anywhere else in existence! Donald Trump is a horrible, selfish, fat, ugly, entitled man who is used to getting his own way and no one ever says no to him, apart from most women. How could anyone vote for Trump? Especially after the Capitol Riot. At this point, if you don’t think that everyone who voted for Trump was racist then you are just in denial.Everyone who voted for Trump is a stupid racist! The Second Amendment to the US Constitution should be abolished because it is an anachronism and all firearms and other weapons should be banned in America. The USA should have an amnesty on all guns in the country. During the Matt Smith era, Doctor Who made a successful appeal to the American TV market by casting American actors in the show and also filming Doctor Who in America (The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, The Angels Take Manhattan). The show also featured multiple Eleventh Doctor episodes set in the USA (The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, A Town Called Mercy (which was filmed in Spain) and The Angels Take Manhattan) in addition to other America-set episodes: The Gunfighters (First Doctor), The TV Movie which was filmed in Canada (Eighth Doctor), Dalek (Ninth Doctor), Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks, Dreamland (Tenth Doctor) and Rosa which was filmed in South Africa (Thirteenth Doctor). Doctor Who has always had a strong following in America, but it was not until the Matt Smith era that the series entered the mainstream of popular culture there and started to appear at sci-fi and fantasy comic cons etc. The most recent Doctor Who US premiere was in 2024 and every February there is a major Doctor Who convention in Los Angeles, USA called Gallifrey One. I have visited America many times, I have been to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Florida, New York, Boston and I worked at a summer camp in Maine. However, I never want to go back to America because I don’t like the United States and most Americans are stupid because they re-elected Donald Trump as US President, despite the fact that he is a racist rapist.

The Gunfighters

★☆☆☆☆

TX: 30/04/1966 – 21/05/1966

Written by Donald Cotton   Directed by Rex Tucker

The TARDIS lands in Tombstone, Arizona, USA in 1881 and the First Doctor, Steven and Dodo begin to explore. Steven and Dodo, dressed as cowboys, encounter local marshal Wyatt Earp, who offers them his protection and warns them to keep his counsel. The Doctor has a toothache because of the sweets given to him by the Toymaker. So the Doctor visits the local dentist, who is in fact a fugitive in hiding called Doc Holliday. Doc Holliday is on the run from the Clanton Brothers. The Clanton Brothers misbehave and force Steven and Dodo to sing and play the Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon. The Doctor is mistaken for Doc Holliday by the Clanton Brothers. Another cowboy called Johnny Ringo soon arrives and shoots the bartender Charlie. The adventure culminates in the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. At the end of the gunfight, Ringo and the three Clantons are shot dead. The Doctor and his friends return to the TARDIS, content that the Doctor’s toothache has now been sorted but shaken by the explosive events in the Wild West.

A Town Called Mercy

★★★☆☆

TX: 15/09/2012

Written by Toby Whithouse    Directed by Saul Metzstein

The Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in Mercy, Nevada, USA in 1870. The town is besieged by the Gunslinger – a cyborg cowboy invented by the Kahler as a soldier in their intergalactic war. Kahler-Tek was created by Kahler-Jex, who feels guilt and shame over his actions in the war. Jex is being sheltered by the town Marshal Isaac in exchange for rebuilding their town with electricity and stopping a cholera outbreak. Kahler-Tek tells the Doctor that if he hands over Jex, he will stop threatening the town. After the town Marshal Isaac is killed, the Doctor assumes the position with Amy as his deputy. The Doctor decides to confront Kahler-Tek in a gunfight in the centre of the town. But this is really a distraction by the Doctor to allow Amy and Rory to help Jex back to his spaceship so he can escape. However, wracked with guilt and shame about his actions, Jex makes the ship self-destruct, killing himself. Kahler-Tek and the Doctor are shocked by his actions. The Doctor, Amy and Rory leave the town of Mercy with Kahler-Tek protecting it for centuries to come. Doctor Who was very popular in America when Matt Smith was the Doctor. Doctor Who was therefore Matt Smith and Karen Gillan’s passport to Hollywood.

About Chris Olsen's TARDIS

I am an aspiring television producer, screenwriter and showrunner. I became a childhood fan of the popular BBC TV series Doctor Who at the age of 10, when my parents introduced me to the show upon its return in 2005. I am interested in all things sci-fi, fantasy and geeky, but Doctor Who takes the crown above all else. This website will detail my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who from throughout its 60-year history. It will also contain content relating to other franchises that I grew up with as a kid, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.
